Linda and Nick Caleo established Pacific Horizons Properties on the Big Island of Hawaii in 1993 as a husband and wife team.

We had moved to the Big Island from Illinois in 1988 when the large construction and industrial equipment manufacturer where Nick had been a Quality Control Engineer closed the doors of its Iowa plant. Linda holds a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Iowa, one of the top-ranked business schools in the country. She had been an Assistant Administrator of a 275-bed hospital in Illinois.

Our own less than satisfactory experiences in purchasing 5 acres of rural Big Island land on which to build our home led us to take up the profession of real estate, starting from the "it has to go more smoothly than this" school of thought. And it has! After spending several years as top listors and producers with an office in Kailua-Kona, we opened Pacific Horizons Properties in July 1993. The Naalehu office opened in April 1998. Naalehu is the southernmost town in the United States. And the rest, as they say, is history. Sadly, so is Nick. Nick passed away in March of 2003, after a long battle with non-Hodgkins lymphoma.

But, years before, we undertook an unusual business model for real estate. Unlike most real estate offices, where individual agents are working alone and competing against each other, as well as all of the agents with other firms, we formed a team to work together, combining our talents. The Big Island is so big that all of the other Hawaiian Islands could fit on it with land left over. Enjoy a wide variety of climates--we even have snow on our mountaintops, Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa, in the wintertime. Most of the real estate on this island is "fee simple", meaning the owner owns the land in perpetuity.

Today, Linda is the Principal Broker for the company. She has earned the Graduate Realtors Institute (GRI) designation from the National Association of Realtors. In addition, she is a Certified Residential Specialist (CRS). She is a member of the Council of Residnetial Specialists and the Hawaii Aloha Chapter of CRS. The CRS professional designation is awarded by the Residential Sales Council, an NAR affiliate. Fewer than 5% of all Realtors nationwide hold these advanced designations. A CRS offers special expertise in marketing and a proven record of experience in residential sales. Only 28 Certified Residential Specialists work on the Big Island. She also has earned the coveted "CIPS"--Certified International Property Specialist--Designation ffrom the NAR. Linda has served as a Director on the Hawaii Island Board of Realtors Board of Directors in 2002, 2004, and 2005; served as Secretary of the Board of Directors in 2006 and 2007; and currently holds a Director position again for 2008. In addition, Linda is the only Big Island member of the Realtors' Land Institute, a branch of the NAR specializing in land sales. Linda is also a Real Estate CyberSpace Specialist, an attendee of the Star Power annual conference since 1999, a graduate of Star Power University: High Tech/High Touch Marketing and Listing Specialization, and a frequent attendee at the National Association of Realtors annual Conference and Certified Residential Specialists' annual conference. She has over 17 years of experience in Hawaii Real Estate.

Sharon M. Madsen, Realtor, is our Broker in Charge of the Naalehu office, as well as our Property Manager, managing both long term and vacation rentals in Kau and South Kona. Sharon has been a member of the Pacific Horizons Team since 1999. She has earned the e-Pro designation, a certification from the National Association of Realtors for the professional practice of Online Real Estate. She is a member of the Council of Residential Specialists and the Hawaii Aloha Chapter of CRS and is pursuing her Certified Residential Specialist designation. She has attended the Star Power Annual Conference since 2001 and is a graduate of Star Power University: Buyer specialization. Sharon has a small farm near Waiohinu, where she has horses and a variety of other animals, and she is our resident alternative energy specialist.

Francis B. McClelland, Realtor Associate, is Linda's Listing Partner. Mack has over four years of experience in Hawaii real estate. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps and has resided in Hawaii for more than thirteen years. He has attended the Star Power Annual Conference since 2004 and is a graduate of Star Power University: Listing Specialization.

Jacob B. Hesterly, Realtor Associate, is an Exclusive Buyer Representative. He has earned the National Association of Realtors designation of Accredited Buyer Specialist (ABR). He holds a Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Technology from the University of Hawaii and has experience in Quality Control and macadamia nut and coffee farming. He has attended the Star Power Annual conference since 2004 and is a graduate of Star Power University: Buyer Specialization. Jake has lived in Hawaii 38 years and has been in Hawaii real estate for six years.
